  1. [Genesis 32:1-32 KJV*]

  1. 1 And Jacob went to his way, and angels[h4397] of Alahym met with him.
  2. 2 And when Jacob saw them, he said, This [is] Alahym’s [h4264]encampment: and he called the name of that place Mahanaim[lh][li].
  3. 3 And Jacob sent messengers[h4397] to his face to Esau his brother’s land of Seir[lj], country of [אדום][h123]Edom[lk].
  4. 4 And he commanded Aleph/Tav{/Mem} them, saying, Thus shall you speak unto my lord Esau; your servant Jacob says thus, I have sojourned with Laban, and stayed there until now:
  5. 5 And I have oxen, and asses, flocks, and menservants, and womenservants: and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find grace in your sight.
  6. 6 And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to your brother Esau, and also he comes to meet you, and four hundred men with him.
  7. 7 Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed: and he divided Aleph/Tav–the people that with Aleph/Tav{/Vav} him, and Aleph/Tav–the flocks, and Aleph/Tav–the oxen, and the camels, into two bands;
  8. 8 And said, If Esau come to the one [h4264]encampment, and smite him, then the remaining [h4264]encampment shall escape.
  9. 9 And Jacob said, O Alahy of my father Abraham, and Alahy of my father Isaac, YAHUAH which said unto me, Return unto your land, and to your kindred, and I will deal[h3190]well with you:
  10. 10 I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which you have done Aleph/Tav–your servant; for with my staff[h4731] I passed over this Aleph/Tav–the Jordan; and now I am become to two [h4264]encampments.
  11. 11 Deliver[h5337]me, I pray you, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I fear Aleph/Tav{/Vav} him, lest he will come and smite me, mother with children.
  12. 12 And Aleph/Tav{/Hey} you said, I will surely do good with you, and set Aleph/Tav–your seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered of multitude.
  13. 13 And he lodged there on that same night; and took of that which came into his hand, [h4503]an offering for Esau his brother;
  14. 14 Two hundred she goats, and twenty he goats, two hundred ewes, and twenty rams,
  15. 15 Thirty suckling camels with their colts, forty kine, and ten bulls, twenty she asses, and ten foals.
  16. 16 And he gave into the hand of his servants, [h5739]herd [by] [h5739]herd to himself; and said unto his servants, Pass over[h5674] before me, and put a space between [h5739]herd and [h5739]herd.
  17. 17 And he commanded Aleph/Tav–the first saying, When Esau my brother meets you, and asks you, saying, Whose Aleph/Tav{/Hey} you? and to where do you go? and whose these before you?
  18. 18 Then you shall say, your servant Jacob's; this [h4503]an offering sent unto my lord Esau: and, behold, him also behind us.
  19. 19 And so commanded he Aleph/Tav–the second, and Aleph/Tav–the third, and all that followed the herds, saying, Like this word shall you speak unto Esau, when you find Aleph/Tav{/Vav} him.
  20. 20 And you shall also say, Behold, your servant Jacob behind us. For he said, [אכפּרה][h3722]I will atone his face [h4503]with the offering that goes for my face, and afterward I will see his face; peradventure [h5375]he will lift up my face.
  21. 21 So [h4503]the offering went over toward his face: and he lodged on that night [h4264]in the encampment.
  22. 22 And he rose up that night, and took Aleph/Tav–two his wives, and Aleph/Tav–two his handmaids, and Aleph/Tav–eleven his children, and passed over Aleph/Tav ford[h4569] Jabbok[ll][h2999].
  23. 23 And he took them, and sent them over Aleph/Tav–the brook, and sent over Aleph/Tav–that he had.
  24. 24 And Jacob was left to himself; and there wrestled[h79] a man with him until rising of the morning.
  25. 25 And when he saw that he prevailed[h3201][יכל] not against him, he touched [h3709]on the hollow of his thigh[h3409]; and the hollow of Jacob's thigh [h3363]was dislocated, [h79]in his wrestling with him.
  26. 26 And he said, Let me go, for the morning rises. And he said, I will not let you go, except you bless me.
  27. 27 And he said unto him, What your name? And he said, Jacob[h3290][יעקב].
  28. 28 And he said, your name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel[h3478][ישׂראל]: for[h8280][שׂרית]you have power with Alahym and with men, [ותּוּכל][h3201]and have prevailed.
  29. 29 And Jacob asked, and said, Tell, I pray you, your name. And he said, Why that you ask for my name? And he blessed Aleph/Tav{/Vav} him there.
  30. 30 And Jacob called the place name Peniel[h6439]: for I have seen Alahym faces to faces, and my soul [h5337]is delivered.
  31. 31 And as he passed over Aleph/Tav–Penuel the sun rose upon him, and he limped upon his thigh.
  32. 32 Therefore the children of Israel eat not [h5384]the forgotten Aleph/Tav–sinew[h1517], which upon the hollow of the thigh, unto this day: because he touched the hollow of Jacob's thigh on [h5384]the forgotten sinew[h1517].

Discussion

  1. Wrestling and Prevailing

  1. [Hosea 12:2-6 KJV] 2 YAHUAH hath also a controversy with Judah, and will punish Jacob according to his ways; according to his doings will he recompense him. 3 He took his brother by the heel in the womb, and by his strength he had power with God: 4 Yea, he had power[h8280] over the angel, and prevailed: he wept, and made supplication unto him: he found him [in] Bethel, and there he spake with us; 5 Even YAHUAH God of hosts; YAHUAH [is] his memorial. 6 Therefore turn thou to thy God: keep mercy and judgment, and wait on thy God continually.
