Chapter 41
Chapter 41
Keywords
[Genesis 41:1-57 — Fresh from the Hebrew]
Pharaoh’s Dreams (v.1–8)
- 1 And it happened at the end of two full years — Pharaoh was dreaming, and look: he was standing by the River.
⚠️ KJV: "the river" — היאר specifically means the Nile, not just any river.
- 2 And look — from the River, seven cows came up, beautiful [h3303] in appearance [h4758] and healthy of flesh, and they grazed in the reed-grass [h260].
⚠️ KJV: "well favoured kine... fed in a meadow" — אחו is Nile marsh-reeds, not a meadow. "Kine" is 300-year-old English for cows.
- 3 And look — seven other cows came up after them from the River, ugly of appearance [h4758] and thin [h1851] of flesh [h1320]. And they stood beside the other cows on the bank of the River.
- 4 And the cows that were ugly in appearance and thin of flesh ate Aleph/Tav—the seven cows that were beautiful in appearance and healthy. And Pharaoh woke up.
- 5 And he fell asleep and dreamed a second time — and look: seven heads of grain [h7641] coming up on a single stalk, healthy [h1277] and good.
⚠️ KJV: "seven ears of corn" — שבלים = heads of grain, NOT corn/maize. Corn didn’t exist in the ancient Near East.
- 6 And look — seven heads of grain, thin and scorched [h7710] by the east wind, sprouted after them.
- 7 And the thin heads of grain swallowed Aleph/Tav—the seven healthy and full heads of grain. And Pharaoh woke up — and look, it was a dream.
- 8 And it happened in the morning — his spirit was agitated. And he sent and called Aleph/Tav—all the magicians of Egypt Vav/Aleph/Tav—all its wise men. And Pharaoh recounted to them Aleph/Tav—his dream, but no one could interpret them for Pharaoh.
⚠️ KJV: "was troubled" — ותפעם means agitated/pounding. His spirit was hammering, not merely "troubled."
📖 Note: Three את/ואת markers in one verse — marking the magicians, the wise men, and the dream itself.
The Cupbearer Remembers (v.9–13)
- 9 Then the chief cupbearer spoke Aleph/Tav—Pharaoh, saying: “Aleph/Tav—My offenses — I am bringing them to mind today.”
⚠️ KJV: "chief butler" — שר המשקים = chief of the cupbearers. A cupbearer was a powerful court official who tasted the king’s wine for poison. Not a household servant.
- 10 Pharaoh was furious with his servants and placed me in custody in the house of the chief executioner — me Vav/Aleph/Tav—the chief baker.”
⚠️ KJV: "captain of the guard" — שר הטבחים = chief of the slaughterers/executioners. The KJV softens this title.
- 11 “And we dreamed a dream on the same night, he and I — each man a dream with its own meaning.”
- 12 “And there with us was a Hebrew youth, a servant of the chief executioner. We told him, and he interpreted for us Aleph/Tav—our dreams — each man’s dream according to its meaning he interpreted.”
- 13 “And it happened — exactly as he interpreted for us, so it was. Me he restored to my position, and him he hanged.”
Joseph Before Pharaoh (v.14–24)
- 14 And Pharaoh sent and called Aleph/Tav—Yoseph — and they rushed him from the pit. And he shaved and changed his garments and came before Pharaoh.
⚠️ KJV: "dungeon" — בור = PIT. Same word from Gen 37:24 when his brothers threw him in. Joseph keeps being pulled out of pits. The KJV destroys this narrative echo.
- 15 “I have dreamed a dream, and there is no one who can interpret it. And I have heard it said about you — you hear a dream and can interpret it.”
- 16 And Yoseph answered Aleph/Tav—Pharaoh, saying: “Not from me — Alahym will answer Aleph/Tav—Pharaoh’s welfare.”
⚠️ KJV: "It is not in me" — בלעדי means "apart from me / without me." Joseph is explicitly redirecting: this has nothing to do with me. Also שלום = welfare/wholeness, not "peace."
- 17 “In my dream — look, I was standing on the bank of the River.”
- 18 “And look — from the River, seven cows came up, healthy of flesh and beautiful of form, and they grazed in the reed-grass.”
- 19 “And look — seven other cows came up after them: poor, and very ugly of form, and gaunt of flesh. I have never seen anything like them in all the land of Egypt for ugliness.”
- 20 “And the gaunt and ugly cows ate Aleph/Tav—the first seven healthy cows.”
- 21 “And they went into their bellies — but you could not tell that they had gone into their bellies. Their appearance was just as ugly as at the beginning. And I woke up.”
⚠️ KJV: KJV loses the visceral Hebrew image of cows going "into their bellies" (אל קרבנה). The Hebrew is more graphic.
- 22 “And I saw in my dream — look: seven heads of grain coming up on a single stalk, full and good.”
- 23 “And look — seven heads of grain: withered, thin, scorched by the east wind, sprouting after them.”
- 24 “And the thin heads of grain swallowed Aleph/Tav—the seven good heads of grain. I told the magicians, but no one could explain it to me.”
Joseph Interprets (v.25–32)
- 25 And Yoseph said to Pharaoh: “Pharaoh’s dream is one. Aleph/Tav—What the Alahym is about to do — He has declared to Pharaoh.”
📖 Note: The את here marks "what Alahym is about to do" — the Aleph/Tav pointing directly at divine action.
- 26 “The seven good cows — they are seven years. And the seven good heads of grain — they are seven years. It is one dream.”
- 27 “And the seven gaunt and ugly cows coming up after them — they are seven years. And the seven empty heads of grain scorched by the east wind — they will be seven years of famine.”
- 28 “This is the thing I spoke to Pharaoh: Aleph/Tav—What the Alahym is about to do — He has shown Aleph/Tav—Pharaoh.”
- 29 “Look — seven years are coming of great abundance in all the land of Egypt.”
📖 Note: Hebrew wordplay: שבע (seven) and שבע (abundance/satiation) share the same consonantal root. The seven years ARE the fullness. Invisible in English.
- 30 “And seven years of famine will rise after them, and all the abundance will be forgotten in the land of Egypt. And the famine will consume Aleph/Tav—the land.”
- 31 “And the abundance will not even be remembered in the land because of the famine that follows — for it will be very heavy.”
⚠️ KJV: "grievous" — כבד literally means "heavy/weighty." Same root as כבוד (glory/weight).
- 32 “And as for the dream being repeated to Pharaoh twice — it is because the matter is established by the Alahym, and the Alahym is hastening to do it.”
⚠️ KJV: "God will shortly bring it to pass" — ממהר means "hurrying/hastening," not "shortly." God is actively accelerating this.
Joseph’s Counsel (v.33–36)
- 33 “And now — let Pharaoh look for a man who is discerning and wise, and set him over the land of Egypt.”
⚠️ KJV: "discreet and wise" — נבון means DISCERNING (perceptive, understanding). Modern "discreet" = secretive. Completely different word now.
- 34 “Let Pharaoh act and appoint overseers over the land, and take a fifth of Aleph/Tav—the land of Egypt during the seven years of abundance.”
📖 Note: וחמש = "take a fifth" — Joseph is proposing a 20% grain tax. Economic policy, not harvest management.
- 35 “And let them gather Aleph/Tav—all the food of these good years that are coming, and store grain under Pharaoh’s authority as food in the cities — and guard it.”
⚠️ KJV: "lay up corn" — בר = grain. Not corn.
- 36 “And the food will serve as a reserve for the land during the seven years of famine that will be in the land of Egypt, so that the land will not be cut off by famine.”
Pharaoh Elevates Joseph (v.37–46)
- 37 And the matter was good in the eyes of Pharaoh and in the eyes of all his servants.
- 38 And Pharaoh said to his servants: “Can we find anyone like this — a man in whom is the spirit of Alahym?”
📖 Note: In Pharaoh’s mouth, רוח אלהים could mean "a divine spirit" — Pharaoh was polytheistic. But the Hebrew narrator uses אלהים without qualification.
- 39 And Pharaoh said to Yoseph: “Since Alahym has made known to you Aleph/Tav—all this — there is no one as discerning and wise as you.”
- 40 “You will be over my house. By your command all my people will submit — only by the throne will I be greater than you.”
⚠️ KJV: "all my people be ruled" — ישק comes from נשק meaning "to kiss." Literal sense: "by your mouth all my people shall kiss" = bow/submit/obey. The KJV flattens a vivid metaphor.
- 41 And Pharaoh said to Yoseph: “See — I have placed you over all the land of Egypt.”
- 42 And Pharaoh removed Aleph/Tav—his signet ring from his hand and placed it on Yoseph’s hand, and clothed him in garments of fine linen, and placed the gold chain on his neck.
⚠️ KJV: "vestures of fine linen" — שש = fine linen (Egyptian linen). "Vestures" hasn’t been used in English for centuries.
- 43 And he had him ride in his second chariot, and they cried out before him: “Avrech!” And he placed him over all the land of Egypt.
⚠️ KJV: "Bow the knee" — אברך is a word of UNCERTAIN MEANING, likely an Egyptian loanword ("Make way!" or "Attention!"). The KJV forces a Hebrew etymology (ברך = knee) that is almost certainly wrong.
- 44 And Pharaoh said to Yoseph: “I am Pharaoh — and without you, no man shall lift Aleph/Tav—his hand Vav/Aleph/Tav—his foot in all the land of Egypt.”
- 45 And Pharaoh named Yoseph Tsaphnath-Pa’neach. And he gave him Aleph/Tav—Asnath daughter of Poti-Phera, priest of On, as a wife. And Yoseph went out over the land of Egypt.
📖 Note: On = Heliopolis, city of the sun god Ra. Poti-Phera = "he whom Ra gave." Joseph married into Egyptian priestly royalty.
- 46 And Yoseph was thirty years old when he stood before Pharaoh king of Egypt. And Yoseph went out from before Pharaoh and passed through all the land of Egypt.
📖 Note: Joseph at 30, David at 30 (2 Sam 5:4), Yeshua at ~30 (Luke 3:23). The pattern of authority-at-thirty runs through Scripture.
The Seven Years of Abundance (v.47–52)
- 47 And the land produced in handfuls during the seven years of abundance.
📖 Note: לקמצים — "in handfuls." The harvest was so enormous they gathered it by the fistful.
- 48 And he gathered Aleph/Tav—all the food of the seven years that were in the land of Egypt, and placed food in the cities — the food of the fields surrounding each city, he stored within it.
- 49 And Yoseph stored grain like the sand of the sea — so exceedingly abundant that he stopped counting, because it was beyond measure.
⚠️ KJV: "laid up corn" — בר = grain. Not corn.
- 50 And to Yoseph, two sons were born before the year of famine came, whom Asnath daughter of Poti-Phera, priest of On, bore to him.
- 51 And Yoseph called Aleph/Tav—the name of the firstborn Menasheh — “Because Alahym has made me forget Aleph/Tav—all my hardship Vav/Aleph/Tav—all my father’s house.”
⚠️ KJV: "toil" for עמל — too mild. עמל encompasses suffering, hardship, misery, and exhausting labor. Joseph endured betrayal, slavery, false accusation, and imprisonment.
📖 Note: Three markers in one verse. מנשה (Menasheh) from root נשה = "to forget / to cause to forget."
- 52 Vav/Aleph/Tav—the name of the second he called Ephrayim — “Because Alahym has made me fruitful in the land of my affliction.”
📖 Note: אפרים (Ephrayim) from root פרה = "to be fruitful." Dual form (-ayim) suggests double fruitfulness.
The Famine Begins (v.53–57)
- 53 And the seven years of abundance that had been in the land of Egypt came to an end.
- 54 And the seven years of famine began to come, just as Yoseph had said. And there was famine in all the lands, but in all the land of Egypt there was bread.
⚠️ KJV: "dearth in all lands" — רעב = FAMINE. "Dearth" is too gentle for catastrophic food scarcity.
- 55 And all the land of Egypt grew hungry, and the people cried out to Pharaoh for bread. And Pharaoh said to all Egypt: “Go to Yoseph — whatever he tells you, do.”
📖 Note: "Go to Yoseph; whatever he tells you, do" — echoes the instruction pattern given about Yeshua. Joseph as a type of Messiah: rejected by brothers, descended into the pit, raised to the right hand of power, the one through whom the nations receive bread.
- 56 And the famine was over all the face of the land. And Yoseph opened Aleph/Tav—all that was in them, and sold grain to Egypt. And the famine grew severe in the land of Egypt.
- ⚠️ KJV: "opened all the storehouses" — the word "storehouses" is NOT in the Hebrew. The text says את כל אשר בהם = "all that was in them." The KJV inserts a word.
- 57 And all the earth came to Egypt, to Yoseph, to buy grain — because the famine was severe in all the earth.
⚠️ KJV: "the famine was so sore in all lands" — חזק = strong/mighty/severe. "Sore" is archaic. Also כל הארץ = "all the earth" — the scope is global.
