Keywords

Aleph/Tav × 21 occurrences • Key themes: guilt, recognition, testing, hidden identity, divine sovereignty

  1. [Genesis 42:1-38 — Fresh from the Hebrew]

Jacob Sends His Sons to Egypt (v.1–5)

  1. 1 And Ya’akov saw that there was grain [h7668] in Egypt. And Ya’akov said to his sons: “Why are you staring at each other?”

⚠️ KJV: "corn" — שבר = grain for purchase. Not corn/maize. Same issue as chapter 41.

  1. 2 And he said: “Look — I have heard that there is grain in Egypt. Go down there and buy grain for us from there, so that we may live and not die.”
  2. 3 And Yoseph’s ten brothers went down to buy grain from Egypt.
  3. 4 But Aleph/Tav—Binyamin, Yoseph’s brother, Ya’akov did not send with his brothers, because he said: “What if disaster [h611] befalls him.”

📖 Note: Ya’akov uses אסון (ason) = disaster/fatal harm. Same word used in 44:29. He lost one son of Rachel; he won’t risk the other.

🔗 Cross-ref: Gen 35:16–20 — Rachel’s death giving birth to Benjamin. Jacob’s protective instinct rooted in Rachel’s memory.

  1. 5 And the sons of Yisra’el came to buy grain among those who came, for the famine was in the land of Kena’an.

Joseph Recognizes His Brothers (v.6–17)

  1. 6 And Yoseph — he was the ruler [h7989] over the land; he was the one selling grain to all the people of the land. And Yoseph’s brothers came and bowed down to him, faces to the ground.

🔗 Cross-ref: Gen 37:5–11 — Joseph’s two dreams: the sheaves bowing, the sun and moon and stars bowing. Here the first dream begins to be fulfilled.

  1. 7 And Yoseph saw Aleph/Tav—his brothers and recognized Aleph/Tav{/Mem} them, but he made himself a stranger [h5234] to them and spoke harshly with them. And he said to them: “Where have you come from?” And they said: “From the land of Kena’an, to buy food.”

⚠️ KJV: "made himself strange" — ויתנכר (vayitnaker) from נכר = to recognize/to make unrecognizable. A deliberate act of disguise. The irony: the verb for “recognize” and “disguise” share the same root.

  1. 8 And Yoseph recognized Aleph/Tav—his brothers, but they did not recognize him.
  2. 9 And Yoseph remembered Aleph/Tav—the dreams that he had dreamed about them. And he said to them: “You are spies [h7270]! You have come to see Aleph/Tav—the nakedness of the land.”

📖 Note: ערות הארץ (ervat ha’aretz) = “the nakedness/vulnerability of the land.” Same word (ערוה) used for sexual exposure in Leviticus. The land’s defenselessness is described in intimate, bodily terms.

  1. 10 And they said to him: “No, my lord — your servants have come to buy food.”
  2. 11 “We are all sons of one man. We are honest [h3651]. Your servants have never been spies.”

⚠️ KJV: "true men" — כנים (kenim) = honest/sincere/straightforward. “True men” is acceptable but “honest” is more natural in modern English.

  1. 12 And he said to them: “No — you have come to see Aleph/Tav—the nakedness of the land.”
  2. 13 And they said: “Your servants are twelve brothers, sons of one man in the land of Kena’an. And look — the youngest is with our father today, and one is no more.”

📖 Note: "One is no more" (והאחד איננו) — they speak of Joseph in his presence without knowing it. The dramatic irony is crushing.

  1. 14 And Yoseph said to them: “It is what I spoke to you, saying: you are spies.”
  2. 15 “By Zayin/Aleph/Tav (cut from Aleph/Tav) you shall be tested: by the life of Pharaoh, you shall not leave this place unless your youngest brother comes here.”

⚠️ KJV: "By the life of Pharaoh" — חי פרעה — Joseph swears by Pharaoh, the way an Egyptian official would. He is fully in his Egyptian identity here.

  1. 16 “Send one of you and let him bring Aleph/Tav—your brother. And you will be imprisoned [h631], and your words will be tested — whether truth is with you. And if not — by the life of Pharaoh, you are surely spies.”
  2. 17 And he gathered them into custody [h4929] for three days.

⚠️ KJV: "ward" — משמר (mishmar) = custody/guard. “Ward” is archaic. Also note: Joseph puts them in custody for three days — just as he was in the pit/prison. He is giving them a taste of what they did to him.

🔗 Cross-ref: Gen 37:24 — Brothers threw Joseph into the pit. Now Joseph puts them into custody. The reversal is deliberate.

Joseph’s Terms and the Brothers’ Guilt (v.18–24)

  1. 18 And Yoseph said to them on the third day: “Do Zayin/Aleph/Tav (cut from Aleph/Tav) and live — I fear Aleph/Tav—the Alahym.”

📖 Note: Joseph reveals something true about himself: “I fear God.” In his Egyptian persona, this is a startling statement. He is a righteous ruler, not a tyrant.

  1. 19 “If you are honest, let one of your brothers be bound in your house of custody, and you — go, carry grain for the famine of your households.”
  2. 20 “And bring Aleph/Tav—your youngest brother to me, and your words will be verified, and you will not die.” And they did so.
  3. 21 And they said to one another: “Truly [h61] we are guilty [h818] concerning our brother, because we saw Aleph/Tav—the distress of his soul when he pleaded with us, and we did not listen. That is why this distress has come upon us.”

⚠️ KJV: "verily guilty" — אבל אשמים (aval ashamim). אבל is a strong affirmation: “truly/indeed.” אשמים = guilty (from the same root as the אשם guilt offering in Leviticus). This is liturgical-grade guilt language.

📖 Note: This is the first time we hear that Joseph PLEADED with them from the pit. Genesis 37 doesn’t mention this — the brothers’ confession reveals a detail the original narrative withheld. They heard his cries and ignored them.

🔗 Cross-ref: Gen 37:23–28 — The original pit scene. No pleading is recorded there. The brothers’ guilt-memory fills in what the narrator deliberately left out.

  1. 22 And Re’uven answered them, saying: “Did I not say to you: don’t sin against the boy? But you did not listen. And now — his blood, look, it is being required [h1875].”

📖 Note: דמו הנה נדרש (damo hineh nidrash) = “his blood is being sought/required.” The verb דרש means to seek, inquire, require. God is calling in the debt.

🔗 Cross-ref: Gen 9:5 — “Your blood of your lives I will require (אדרש).” Same verb. Blood-debt theology established at the covenant with Noah.

  1. 23 And they did not know that Yoseph was listening, because the interpreter [h3887] was between them.

📖 Note: המליץ (hamelitz) = the interpreter/mediator. This word later takes on theological weight — a “melitz” is an intercessor or advocate (see Job 33:23).

  1. 24 And he turned away from them and wept. Then he returned to them and spoke to them. And he took from them Aleph/Tav—Shim’on and bound Aleph/Tav{/Vav} him before their eyes.

📖 Note: Why Simeon? Possibly because Simeon was the most aggressive brother (see Gen 34 — the Shechem massacre). Or because Reuben had tried to save Joseph (Gen 37:21–22), so Joseph spares him. Levi, the other Shechem conspirator, would become the priestly tribe.

🔗 Cross-ref: Gen 34:25–30 — Simeon and Levi’s violence at Shechem. Gen 37:21–22 — Reuben’s attempt to rescue Joseph.

The Money in the Sacks (v.25–28)

  1. 25 And Yoseph commanded, and they filled Aleph/Tav—their vessels with grain, and returned each man’s silver [h3701] to his sack, and gave them provisions for the journey. And it was done for them.

📖 Note: Joseph returns their money — the grain is given as a gift, though they don’t know it yet. This mirrors the freely-given bread of the Messianic pattern.

  1. 26 And they loaded Aleph/Tav—their grain on their donkeys and departed from there.
  2. 27 And one of them opened Aleph/Tav—his sack to give feed to his donkey at the lodging place, and he saw Aleph/Tav—his silver — and look, it was in the mouth of his bag [h572].

⚠️ KJV: "אמתחת" (amtachat) is a specific word for a travel bag/grain sack. The KJV alternates between “sack” and “sack’s mouth” — which is actually close to the Hebrew פי אמתחתו (mouth of his bag).

  1. 28 And he said to his brothers: “My silver has been returned — and look, it is in my bag!” And their hearts sank [h3318], and they trembled, each man to his brother, saying: “What is Zayin/Aleph/Tav (cut from Aleph/Tav) Alahym has done to us?”

⚠️ KJV: "their heart failed them" — ויצא לבם literally means “their heart went out.” Their hearts left their bodies. A vivid image of terror the KJV flattens.

📖 Note: "What is this God has done to us?" — They correctly attribute this to divine action. Even in their terror, they sense the hand of Alahym orchestrating events they cannot understand.

The Brothers Report to Ya’akov (v.29–34)

  1. 29 And they came to Ya’akov their father, to the land of Kena’an, and told him Aleph/Tav—all that had happened to them, saying:
  2. 30 “The man, the lord of the land, spoke with us harshly and treated Aleph/Tav{/Nun/Vav}—us [h5414] as spies of the land.”

⚠️ KJV: "took us for spies" — ויתן אתנו (vayiten otanu) literally means “and he put/placed us” as spies. The verb נתן is “to give/place,” not “to take.”

  1. 31 “And we said to him: we are honest. We have never been spies.”
  2. 32 “We are twelve brothers, sons of our father. One is no more, and the youngest is today with our father in the land of Kena’an.”
  3. 33 “And the man, the lord of the land, said to us: by Zayin/Aleph/Tav (cut from Aleph/Tav) I will know that you are honest — leave one of your brothers with me, and take grain for the famine of your households and go.”
  4. 34 “And bring Aleph/Tav—your youngest brother to me, and I will know that you are not spies but honest men. I will give you Aleph/Tav—your brother, and you may trade [h5503] in the land.”

⚠️ KJV: "traffic in the land" — תסחרו (tischaru) from סחר = to trade/do business. “Traffic” has shifted in modern English to mean vehicle movement. “Trade freely” is the sense.

Ya’akov’s Despair (v.35–38)

  1. 35 And it happened as they were emptying their sacks — and look, each man’s bundle of silver was in his sack. And they saw their bundles of silver — they and their father — and they were afraid.
  2. 36 And Ya’akov their father said to them: Aleph/Tav—me you have bereaved [h7921]. Yoseph is no more, and Shim’on is no more, Vav/Aleph/Tav—Binyamin you would take. Upon me are all these things.”

⚠️ KJV: "all these things are against me" — עלי היו כלנה = “upon me are all of these.” The Hebrew is ambiguous — it could mean “against me” or “upon me” as a burden. Jacob sees himself as the one absorbing all the loss.

📖 Note: שכלתם (shikkaltem) = “you have bereaved me” — the verb שכל specifically means to be bereaved of children. Jacob accuses his own sons of robbing him of his children. He doesn’t yet know how right he is.

🔗 Cross-ref: Gen 37:31–35 — The brothers brought the bloody coat to Jacob. His grief then; his grief now. The wound never healed.

  1. 37 And Re’uven said to his father: Aleph/Tav—my two sons you may put to death if I do not bring him back to you. Give him into my hand and I will return him to you.”

📖 Note: Reuben’s offer is well-intentioned but absurd — killing two of Jacob’s grandsons would only add to his loss, not compensate for it. Compare with Judah’s more effective pledge in 43:8–9.

🔗 Cross-ref: Gen 43:8–9 — Judah’s surety: “I will be guarantee for him... if I do not bring him back, I will bear the blame forever.” A better pledge — personal liability, not more death.

  1. 38 And he said: “My son will not go down with you, for his brother is dead and he alone remains. If disaster [h611] befalls him on the way that you are going, you will bring down Aleph/Tav—my gray hair in sorrow to She’ol.”

⚠️ KJV: "bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave" — שאול (She’ol) is NOT “the grave.” She’ol is the abode of the dead, the underworld realm. The KJV’s “grave” flattens a rich cosmological concept into a burial plot.

📖 Note: Jacob says “he alone remains” (הוא לבדו נשאר) — meaning Benjamin is the sole remaining son of Rachel. Jacob’s love is still organized around Rachel, even decades after her death.

🔗 Cross-ref: Gen 35:16–20 — Rachel’s death. Gen 37:35 — Jacob’s vow to go down to She’ol mourning. The same language, the same destination.

Discussion

  1. Truth

  1. John 8:31-59 — Retranslation from the Greek

31 Then Yahusha said to the Yehudim who had believed him: "If you remain in my word, you are truly my disciples."

32 "And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."

33 They answered him: "We are seed of Avraham and have never been enslaved G1398 to anyone. How can you say: 'You will become free'?"

📖 Note: δεδουλεύκαμεν (dedouleukamen) = "we have been enslaved." This is historically absurd — Egypt, Babylon, Assyria, Persia, and they are under Rome as they speak. The denial reveals spiritual blindness. 🔗 Cross-ref: Ex 1:13–14 — Israel enslaved in Egypt. 2 Kings 25:11 — exile to Babylon. Their claim is false on its face.

34 Yahusha answered them: "Truly, truly I say to you — everyone who practices G4160 sin is a slave of sin."

⚠️ KJV: "servant of sin" — δοῦλος (doulos) = slave, not servant. A servant can leave. A slave cannot. The KJV softens the brutality of the metaphor. You don't serve sin — sin owns you.

35 "And the slave does not remain in the house into the age. The son remains into the age."

⚠️ KJV: "abideth ever" — εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα = "into the age/eon." Not "forever" in the modern sense — it means into the coming age, the age to come. The slave has no inheritance rights. The son does.

36 "So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed G3689."

📖 Note: ὄντως (ontos) = truly/really/in reality. Not just legally free — actually, ontologically free.

"Your Father the Devil" (v.37–47)

37 "I know that you are seed of Avraham. But you seek to kill me, because my word has no room G5562 in you."

⚠️ KJV: "hath no place in you" — οὐ χωρεῖ ἐν ὑμῖν. The verb χωρέω means to make room, to advance, to progress. His word can't advance inside them — there is no space for it to grow.

38 "I speak what I have seen with my Father. And you do what you have heard from your father."

39 They answered and said to him: "Our father is Avraham." Yahusha said to them: "If you were children of Avraham, you would do the works of Avraham."

📖 Note: He distinguishes σπέρμα (seed — biological descent, which he granted in v.37) from τέκνα (children — those who share the father's character). Seed ≠ child. 🔗 Cross-ref: Rom 9:7–8 — "Not all who are descended from Yisra'el are Yisra'el... It is not the children of the flesh who are children of Alahym, but the children of the promise."

40 "But now you seek to kill me — a man who has spoken to you the truth which I heard from Alahym. Avraham did not do this."

41 "You do the works of your father." They said to him: "We were not born of fornication G4202. We have one Father — Alahym."

📖 Note: πορνείας (porneias) — likely a barb at Yahusha's birth. They are implying: "We aren't illegitimate — unlike you." The slander of his birth was already circulating.

42 Yahusha said to them: "If Alahym were your Father, you would love me, for I came forth and have come from Alahym. I did not come of myself — He sent me."

43 "Why do you not understand my speech? Because you are not able to hear G191 my word."

📖 Note: οὐ δύνασθε ἀκούειν = "you are not ABLE to hear." This is not unwillingness — it is inability. They literally cannot process what he is saying. The Greek distinguishes λαλιά (speech — the outward form) from λόγος (word — the substance). They can't get past the surface to the content.

44 "You are of your father, the Adversary G1228, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning and has not stood in the truth, because truth is not in him. When he speaks the lie, he speaks from his own, because he is a liar and the father of it."

⚠️ KJV: "the devil" — διάβολος (diabolos) = "the slanderer/accuser/adversary." Not a proper name — a title describing function. 🔗 Cross-ref: Gen 3:4–5 — The serpent's first lie: "You will not surely die." He was a murderer from the beginning because the lie produced death. Also Gen 4:8 — Cain, the first murderer, acting out his father's nature.

45 "But because I speak the truth, you do not believe me."

46 "Which of you convicts G1651 me of sin? If I speak truth, why do you not believe me?"

47 "The one who is of Alahym hears the words of Alahym. The reason you do not hear is that you are not of Alahym."

"Before Avraham Was, I AM" (v.48–59)

48 The Yehudim answered and said to him: "Do we not say rightly that you are a Shomroni and have a demon G1140?"

📖 Note: "Samaritan" was a racial/theological slur — a half-breed, a heretic. Paired with "demon-possessed," they are saying: you are ethnically impure and spiritually insane.

49 Yahusha answered: "I do not have a demon, but I honor my Father, and you dishonor me."

50 "I do not seek my own glory. There is One who seeks and judges."

51 "Truly, truly I say to you — if anyone keeps my word, he will never see G2334 death into the age."

52 The Yehudim said to him: "Now we know that you have a demon. Avraham died, and the prophets — and you say: 'If anyone keeps my word, he will never taste death into the age'?"

53 "Are you greater than our father Avraham, who died? And the prophets died. Who do you make yourself?"

54 Yahusha answered: "If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me — of whom you say: 'He is our Alahym.'"

55 "And you have not known him. But I know him. And if I say that I do not know him, I will be a liar like you. But I know him and I keep his word."

56 "Your father Avraham rejoiced G21 to see my day, and he saw it and was glad."

📖 Note: ἠγαλλιάσατο (egalliasato) = leaped for joy/exulted. Abraham didn't just look forward to it — he rejoiced in it. The verb is explosive joy. 🔗 Cross-ref: Gen 22:8 — "Alahym will provide for himself Aleph/Tav—the lamb." Abraham saw the day on Moriah. Also Gen 18:1–3 — Abraham's encounter with YHVH at Mamre, where he bowed to the ground.

57 The Yehudim said to him: "You are not yet fifty years old, and you have seen Avraham?"

58 Yahusha said to them: "Truly, truly I say to you — before Avraham came into being G1096, I AM G1510."

⚠️ KJV: "Before Abraham was, I am" — This is accurate but the grammar is even more devastating than English shows. πρὶν Ἀβραὰμ γενέσθαι (genesthai — aorist infinitive = "came into being") vs ἐγὼ εἰμί (ego eimi — present tense = "I AM"). Abraham entered existence at a point in time. Yahusha does not say "I was" (ἤμην) — he says "I AM." Present tense. He claims to exist outside of time, in continuous present being. This is a direct claim to the divine name. 🔗 Cross-ref: Ex 3:14 — אהיה אשר אהיה "I AM who I AM" — the revelation of the Name at the burning bush. Yahusha is claiming to be the voice Moses heard. Also Isa 41:4 — "I, YHVH, the first and with the last — I AM He." This is the Aleph/Tav — the first and the last, the beginning and the end.

59 Then they picked up stones to throw at him. But Yahusha was hidden and went out of the temple.

📖 Note: They understood exactly what he claimed. The stoning response is for blasphemy (Lev 24:16) — claiming the divine Name for yourself. They didn't misunderstand him. They understood perfectly. They just didn't believe him.

  1. John 3:12-21 — Retranslation from the Greek

Keywords: heavenly/ἐπουράνιος G2032 • lifted up/ὑψόω G5312 • one-of-a-kind/μονογενής G3439 • perish/ἀπόλλυμι G622 • judgment/κρίσις G2920 • age-enduring/αἰώνιος G166

Earthly and Heavenly Things (v.12–13)

12 "If I told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things G2032?"

13 "And no one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven — the Son of Man."

📖 Note: No one has gone up to get heavenly knowledge and brought it back. The only reliable source of heavenly information is the one who came DOWN from there. Yeshua is the sole authorized witness of heaven. 🔗 Cross-ref: Deut 30:12 — "Who will ascend to heaven for us and bring it to us?" Also Prov 30:4 — "Who has ascended to heaven and come down? ...What is his name, and what is his son's name?"

The Serpent and the Son (v.14–15)

14 "And just as Mosheh lifted up G5312 the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up—"

🔗 Cross-ref: Num 21:8–9 — YHVH told Moses to make a bronze serpent and set it on a pole. Everyone bitten who looked at it lived. The serpent on the pole = the image of the curse (sin) lifted up so that those who look upon it in trust are healed. Yeshua takes on the image of the curse (Gal 3:13 — "cursed is everyone hung on a tree") to heal those who look to him.

15 "— so that everyone who believes in him may have age-enduring G166 life."

⚠️ KJV: "eternal life" — αἰώνιος ζωή. αἰώνιος is from αἰών (aion/age). It means "pertaining to the age" or "age-enduring." The concept is life of the coming age — the quality and duration of life in the age to come — not merely "life that goes on forever." It is a different KIND of life, not just a longer one.

For Alahym So Loved the World (v.16–18)

16 "For Alahym so loved the world G2889 that he gave his one-of-a-kind G3439 Son, so that everyone who believes in him should not perish G622 but have age-enduring life."

⚠️ KJV: "only begotten" — μονογενής (monogenes) does NOT mean "only begotten." It is μόνος (only) + γένος (kind/type), not γεννάω (to beget). It means "one of a kind, unique." The Nicene Creed's "begotten not made" came from a later theological reading, not from this word. Isaac is called μονογενής in Heb 11:17 — but Isaac was not Abraham's only begotten son (Ishmael existed). Isaac was his unique, one-of-a-kind son of promise. 🔗 Cross-ref: Gen 22:2 — "Take now Aleph/Tav—your son, Aleph/Tav—your one-of-a-kind (יחיד), whom you love, Aleph/Tav—Yitzhak." Three Aleph/Tav markers on the son being offered. The Aleph/Tav marks what Alahym is giving.

17 "For Alahym did not send his Son into the world to judge G2919 the world, but that the world might be saved through him."

⚠️ KJV: "condemn" — κρίνω (krino) = to judge/separate/distinguish. The KJV uses "condemn" here but "judge" in v.18. It's the same root word. He didn't come to render the verdict — he came to rescue before the verdict falls.

18 "The one who believes in him is not judged. The one who does not believe has been judged already G2235, because he has not believed in the name of the one-of-a-kind Son of Alahym."

📖 Note: ἤδη κέκριται (ede kekritai) — perfect tense. "Has already been judged." The judgment is not future — it is a present, completed state. Unbelief is not waiting for a verdict; it IS the verdict. You are already standing in the courtroom and the gavel has already fallen.

Light and Darkness (v.19–21)

19 "And this is the judgment G2920: that the light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the light, for their works were evil."

📖 Note: αὕτη ἐστὶν ἡ κρίσις = "THIS IS the judgment." The judgment is not a future event — the judgment IS the preference. Choosing darkness when light is available — that act of choosing is itself the condemnation. The light doesn't judge you; your response to the light judges you. 🔗 Cross-ref: Gen 1:3–4 — "And Alahym said, Let there be light... and Alahym separated Aleph/Tav—the light from the darkness." The separation of light and darkness is the first act of creation and the ongoing act of judgment.

20 "For everyone who practices G4238 worthless things hates the light and does not come to the light, so that his works may not be exposed G1651."

⚠️ KJV: "doeth evil" — φαῦλα (phaula) = worthless/bad/foul. A slightly different word from πονηρός (poneros = actively evil). φαῦλος suggests things that are cheap, base, worthless — not necessarily dramatic villainy, but a life of low-grade corruption. Also "reproved" → ἐλεγχθῇ = exposed/brought to light/convicted. Stronger than "reproved."

21 "But the one who does the truth G4160+G225 comes to the light, so that his works may be revealed — that they have been worked in Alahym."

📖 Note: ποιῶν τὴν ἀλήθειαν = "DOING the truth." Truth in Hebrew-Greek thought is not merely a belief — it is a practice. You don't just believe truth; you DO it. This is a thoroughly Hebraic concept dressed in Greek: אמת (emet/truth) is something you walk in, not just affirm. 🔗 Cross-ref: 1 John 1:6 — "If we say we have fellowship with him and walk in darkness, we lie and do not DO the truth." Same phrase, same author.

  1. Custody

  1. Matthew 5:21-26 — Retranslation from the Greek

Keywords: murder/φονεύω G5407 • judgment/κρίσις G2920 • council/συνέδριον G4892 • Gehenna/γέεννα G1067 • gift/δῶρον G1435 • adversary/ἀντίδικος G476

Murder Begins in the Heart (v.21–22)

21 "You have heard that it was said to the ancients: 'You shall not murder' G5407 — and whoever murders will be liable to the judgment G2920."

🔗 Cross-ref: Ex 20:13 — לא תרצח "You shall not murder." The sixth commandment. Aleph/Tav is not present here, but note: the Decalogue was spoken by the voice of Alahym directly — the same voice Yeshua is now reinterpreting with authority ("But I say to you").

22 "But I say to you that everyone who is angry G3710 with his brother without cause will be liable to the judgment. And whoever says to his brother 'Raka!' G4469 will be liable to the Sanhedrin G4892. And whoever says 'You fool!' will be liable to the Gehenna G1067 of fire."

⚠️ KJV: "without a cause" — εἰκῇ (eike). Some manuscripts omit this word entirely. If original, it means "without legitimate reason" — a groundless, empty anger. If omitted (as in older manuscripts), Yeshua forbids ALL anger toward a brother, full stop. The textual question matters theologically. ⚠️ KJV: "Raca" — Ῥακά is transliterated Aramaic (ריקא), meaning "empty one / worthless / empty-headed." It attacks the person's intellect — you are hollow, you have nothing inside you. Not a mild insult. ⚠️ KJV: "the council" — συνέδριον (synedrion) = the Sanhedrin, the supreme Jewish court of 71 elders. This is not a vague "council" — it's the highest judicial body in Yisra'el. Yeshua is escalating: local court → supreme court → Gehenna. ⚠️ KJV: "hell fire" — γέεννα τοῦ πυρός. γέεννα is NOT "hell." It is Ge-Hinnom (גי הנם), the Valley of Hinnom outside Yerushalayim, where children were burned alive to Molek. It became the city garbage dump — perpetually burning. Yeshua uses a real, physical place his listeners could walk to, not an abstract afterlife concept. 🔗 Cross-ref: 2 Chr 28:3, 33:6 — Ahaz and Manasseh burned their sons in the Valley of Ben-Hinnom. Jer 7:31–32 — YHVH says: "I did not command this, nor did it come into my heart." The valley of child sacrifice becomes the image of final judgment. Also 1 John 3:15 — "Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer." Same escalation Yeshua teaches here. 📖 Note: The three-tier escalation is deliberate: (1) anger in the heart → local judgment, (2) verbal contempt ("Raka") → the Sanhedrin, (3) calling someone μωρέ (more — "fool/rebel," possibly from the Hebrew מורה = rebel against God, cf. Num 20:10 where Moses calls Israel "rebels") → Gehenna. Murder doesn't start with a weapon. It starts with anger, escalates through contempt, and finishes with dehumanization. Yeshua traces the entire trajectory.

Reconcile Before You Worship (v.23–24)

23 "Therefore, if you bring your gift G1435 to the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you —"

24 "— leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled G1259 to your brother, and then come and offer your gift."

📖 Note: διαλλάγηθι (diallagethi) — aorist passive imperative of διαλλάσσω = to exchange hostility for friendship, to be thoroughly changed toward one another. This is not "apologize" — it is a full exchange of posture. The δια- prefix means "through/completely." A total reversal of the relationship. 📖 Note: The sequence is shocking. You are mid-worship. Your hand is on the sacrifice. And Yeshua says: STOP. Walk away from the altar. Go find your brother. Fix it. THEN come back. Reconciliation with your brother takes priority over your offering to Alahym. Worship with unresolved hatred is not accepted. 🔗 Cross-ref: Gen 4:3–7 — Qayin's offering was not accepted because of what was in his heart. Alahym told him: "If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door." The anger Qayin refused to deal with led directly to murder. This is exactly the trajectory Yeshua is warning against. 🔗 Cross-ref: 1 Sam 15:22 — "Does YHVH delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the voice of YHVH? To obey is better than sacrifice." Also Hos 6:6 — "I desire mercy, not sacrifice" — which Yeshua quotes directly in Matt 9:13 and 12:7.

Settle With Your Adversary (v.25–26)

25 "Come to terms quickly with your adversary at law G476 while you are on the way with him, lest your adversary hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the officer G5257, and you be thrown into prison."

⚠️ KJV: "Agree with thine adversary quickly" — εὐνοῶν (eunoon) from εὔνοια = goodwill/well-disposed. Not "agree" — become well-disposed, show goodwill, settle the matter with a generous spirit. The verb is about your posture, not about caving to their demands. ⚠️ KJV: "adversary" — ἀντίδικος (antidikos) = the opposing party in a lawsuit. ἀντί (against) + δίκη (justice/case). This is legal language — someone who has a legitimate case against you. Not an enemy — a plaintiff. ⚠️ KJV: "officer" — ὑπηρέτης (hyperetes) = an attendant/servant of the court, a bailiff. Not a vague "officer."

26 "Truly I say to you — you will not come out of there until you have paid the last quadrans G2835."

⚠️ KJV: "farthing" — κοδράντης (kodrantes) = a Roman quadrans, the smallest Roman coin. Worth 1/64 of a denarius (a day's wage). Roughly equivalent to two minutes of labor. You will pay down to the last cent. There is no partial settlement in this court. 📖 Note: The parable operates on two levels. Literally: settle lawsuits before they escalate — once you're in the system, you lose everything. Spiritually: you are on the road to judgment right now. The time to make things right is while you are still "on the way" (ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ) — while there is still time. Once judgment falls, there is no negotiation. 🔗 Cross-ref: Luke 12:58–59 — parallel passage with identical language. Also Prov 25:8–10 — "Do not go hastily to court... settle your case with your neighbor privately." The wisdom tradition already taught this; Yeshua raises the stakes to eschatological urgency.

  1. Blood Required

  1. [Gen 9:1-7] 1 And Alahym blessed[h1288] Aleph/Tav–Noah and Aleph/Tav–his sons, and said unto them, Be fruitful[h6509], and multiply[h7235], [h4390]and fill Aleph/Tav–the earth. 2 And the fear[h4172] of you and the dread[h2844] of you shall be upon every [h2416]creature of [h127]the ground, and upon every flying creature of the air, upon all that creep [upon] the earth, and upon all fishes of the sea; into your hand are they [h5414]given. 3 Every creeping thing, that which is living, shall be food for you; [h3418]like greens I have given you Aleph/Tav–all things. 4 But flesh[h1320] [h5315]in his soul, [h1818]his blood, you shall not eat. 5 And only Aleph/Tav–your blood for your souls will I require[h1875]; from the hand of every creature will I require it, and from the hand of the Adam; from the hand of man's brother will I require Aleph/Tav–a soul of the Adam. 6 Whoso sheds the Adam’s blood, by the Adam shall his blood be shed: for He made Aleph/Tav–the Adam in the image of Alahym. 7 And you of Aleph/Tav, be fruitful, and multiply; [h8317]teem in the earth, and multiply therein.
  2. [Gen 4:1-15] 1 And the Adam knew[h3045] his wife Eve of Aleph/Tav; and she conceived[h2029], and bare Cain[h7014] of Aleph/Tav, and she said, [h7069]I have purchased man YAHUAH of Aleph/Tav. 2 And she again bare his brother of Aleph/Tav, Abel[h1893] of Aleph/Tav. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground[h127][אדמה]. 3 And it came to pass [h7093]from the end [h3117]of days, that Cain [h935]caused to come of the fruit[h6529] of the ground[h127] an offering[h4503] unto YAHUAH. 4 And Abel, he also[h1571] [h935]caused to come [h1062]from the birthright of his flock[h6629] [h2459]and of their fat. And YAHUAH had respect[h8159] unto Abel and to his offering[h4503]: 5 But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain [h2734]burned [h3966]exceedingly, and his [h6440]face fell[h5307]. 6 And YAHUAH said unto Cain, Why are you [h2734]burned? and why is your [h6440]face fallen? 7 If you do well, shall you not[h7613]be elevated? and if you do not well, sin lies down onto the door, and unto yours his desire, but you of Aleph/Tav{/Hey} [h4910]must rule over him. 8 And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him. 9 And YAHUAH said unto Cain, Where [is] Abel your brother? And he said, I know not: [Am] I my brother's keeper? 10 And he said, What have you done? the voice of your brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground. 11 And now [art] you of Aleph/Tav cursed from [h127]the ground, which hath opened her mouth of Aleph/Tav [h3947]to take of your brother's blood of Aleph/Tav from your hand; 12 When [h5647]you serve the ground of Aleph/Tav, she shall not henceforth give her strength to you; [h5128]wandering and [h5110]beamoning you shall be on earth. 13 And Cain said unto YAHUAH, My punishment [is] greater than I can bear. 14 Behold, you have driven me of Aleph Tav out this day from the face of the earth; and from your face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, anyone that findeth me shall slay me. 15 And YAHUAH said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, [h5358]it shall be avenged sevenfold[h7659]. And YAHUAH put onto Cain an Aleph and {Vav} Tav, lest any finding him of Aleph/Tav{/Vav} [h5221]should cause him to be killed.
