[Genesis 37:1-36 KJV*]
- 1 And Jacob dwelt in the land of his father’s [h4033]pilgrimage, in the land of Canaan.
- 2 These generations of Jacob. Joseph, a son of seventeen years, was feeding the flock of Aleph/Tav–his brothers; and he a lad, Aleph/Tav–sons of Bilhah, and Aleph/Tav–sons of Zilpah, his father's wives: and Joseph brought unto his father their evil report.
- 3 Now Israel loved Aleph/Tav–Joseph more than all his children, because he [was] the son of his old age: and he made him a coat[h3801] of [h6446]stripes.
- 4 And when his brothers saw that their father loved Aleph/Tav{/Vav} him more than all his brothers, they hated Aleph/Tav{/Vav} him, and could not speak peaceably unto him.
- 5 And Joseph dreamed[h2492] a dream[h2472], and he told his brothers: and they hated him yet the more.
- 6 And he said unto them, Please hear this dream which I have dreamed:
- 7 For, behold, we binding[h481] sheaves[h485] in the field, and, lo, my sheaf arose, and also stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves stood round about, and bowed down to my sheaf.
- 8 And his brothers said to him, shall you [h4427]reign to reign over us? or shall you [h4910]rule to rule over us? And they hated Aleph/Tav{/Vav} him yet the more for his dreams, and for his words.
- 9 And he dreamed yet another dream, and told Aleph/Tav{/Vav} him his brothers, and said, Behold, I have dreamed a dream again; and, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars bowed down to me.
- 10 And he told [it] to his father, and to his brothers: and his father rebuked him, and said unto him, What [is] this dream that you hast dreamed? Shall I and your mother and your brothers indeed come to bow down ourselves to you to the earth?
- 11 And his brothers envied him; but his father kept Aleph/Tav–the word.
- 12 And his brothers went to feed Aleph/Tav–flock of their father in Shechem.
- 13 And Israel said unto Joseph, Do not your brothers feed in Shechem? come, and I will send you unto them. And he said to him, Behold me.
- 14 And he said to him, Please go, see Aleph/Tav–peace of your brothers, and Aleph/Tav–peace of the flocks; and bring me word again. So he sent him out of the vale of Hebron, and he came to Shechem.
- 15 And a man found him, and, behold, wandering[h8582] in the field: and the man asked him, saying, What do you seek?
- 16 And he said, I seek my brothers: please tell me, where they feed.
- 17 And the man said, They journeyed from here; for I heard them say, Let us go to Dothan. And Joseph went after his brothers, and found them in Dothan.
- 18 And when they saw Aleph/Tav{/Vav} him afar off, even before he came near unto them, they conspired against Aleph/Tav{/Vav} him to kill him.
- 19 And they said man to his brother, Behold, this lord of the dreams comes.
- 20 Come now therefore, and let us [h2026]kill him, and cast him into one of the pits, and we will say, a creature of evil has devoured him: and we shall see what will become of his dreams.
- 21 And Reuben heard [it], and he delivered[h5337] him out of their hands; and said, Let us not [h5221]strike a soul.
- 22 And Reuben said unto them, Shed no blood, cast Aleph/Tav{/Vav} him into this pit that in the wilderness, and lay no hand upon him; that deliver Aleph/Tav{/Vav} him out of their hands, to return him to his father.
- 23 And it came to pass, when Joseph was come unto his brothers, that they stripped Aleph/Tav–Joseph of Aleph/Tav–his coat, Aleph/Tav–coat of the stripes that on him;
- 24 And they took him, and cast Aleph/Tav{/Vav} him [into] the pit: and the pit empty, no water in him.
- 25 And they sat down to eat bread: and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and, behold, a company[h736] of Ishmeelites came from Gilead with their camels bearing spices[h5219] and balm[h6875] and myrrh[h3910], going to carry down to Egypt.
- 26 And Judah said unto his brothers, What profit if we slay Aleph/Tav–our brother, and conceal Aleph/Tav–his blood?
- 27 Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmeelites, and let not our hand be upon him; for he our brother, our flesh. And his brothers heard him.
- 28 Then there passed by Midianites merchantmen; and they drew and lifted up Aleph/Tav–Joseph out of the pit, and sold Aleph/Tav–Joseph to the Ishmeelites for twenty silver: and they brought Aleph/Tav–Joseph into Egypt.
- 29 And Reuben returned unto the pit; and, behold, Joseph [was] not in the pit; and he rent Aleph/Tav–his clothes.
- 30 And he returned unto his brothers, and said, The child [is] not; and I, whither shall I go?
- 31 And they took Aleph/Tav–coat of Joseph and killed a kid of the goats, and dipped Aleph/Tav–the coat in the blood;
- 32 And they sent Aleph/Tav–coat of the stripes, and they brought [it] to their father; and said, cut from {Zayin/}Aleph/Tav have we found: please know whether she your son's coat or no.
- 33 And he knew her, and said, my son's coat;[mh] an evil creature has devoured him; Joseph [h2963]is torn in pieces [h2963]torn in pieces.
- 34 And Jacob rent his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his loins, and mourned for his son many days.
- 35 And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted; and he said, For I will go down into the grave unto my son mourning. Thus his father wept for Aleph/Tav{/Vav} him.
- 36 And the Midianites sold Aleph/Tav{/Vav} him into Egypt unto Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh's, captain of the guard.
Discussion
Dreams
- [Numbers 12:6 KJV] 6 And he said, Hear now my words: If there be a prophet among you, [I] YAHUAH will make myself known unto him in a vision, [and] will speak unto him in a dream.
Stars
- [Philippians 2:1-11 KJV] 1 If [there be] therefore any consolation in Messiah, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies, 2 Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, of one accord, of one mind. 3 nothing through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. 4 Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. 5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Messiah Yahusha: 6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: 7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: 8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. 9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: 10 That at the name of Yahusha every knee should bow, of in heaven, and in earth, and under the earth; 11 And every tongue should confess that Yahusha Messiah Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
- [Matthew 2:1-15 KJV] 1 Now when Yahusha was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, 2 Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. 3 When Herod the king had heard, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. 4 And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Messiah should be born. 5 And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet, 6 And thou Bethlehem, the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel. 7 Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared. 8 And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also. 9 When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. 11 And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh. 12 And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way. 13 And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him. 14 When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt: 15 And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son.
- [Job 38:7 KJV] 7 When morning[h1242] stars[h3556] sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
- [Revelation 2:26-28 KJV] 26 And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations: 27 And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of my Father. 28 And I will give him the morning[g4407] star[g792].
- [Revelation 22:13-17 KJV] 13 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last. 14 Blessed [are] they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. 15 For without [are] dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie. 16 I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, the bright star[g792] and [g3720]day break. 17 And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.
Joseph as a type of the Messiah
- [Gen 37:25] 25 And they sat down to eat bread: and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and, behold, a company[h736] of Ishmeelites came from Gilead with their camels bearing spices[h5219] and balm[h6875] and myrrh[h3910], going to carry down to Egypt.
- [Genesis 43:11-15 KJV] 11 And their father Israel said unto them, If so, now make a cut from {Zayin/}Aleph/Tav; take [מזּמרת][h2173]from pruning the land into your vessels, and carry down to the man an offering, a little balm[h6875], and a little honey, spices[h5219], and myrrh[h3910], nuts, and almonds: 12 And take double money in your hand; and the money that was brought again in the mouth of your sacks, carry again in your hand; peradventure it an oversight: 13 Take also your brother, and arise, go again unto the man: 14 And God Almighty give you mercy before the man, that he may send away your other brother, and Benjamin. If I be bereaved, I am bereaved. 15 And the men took that present, and they took double money in their hand, and Benjamin[mi]; and rose up, and went down to Egypt, and stood before Joseph.
- [Matthew 25:34 KJV] 34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:
- [Luke 22:69 KJV] 69 Hereafter shall the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God.
- [Acts 2:33 KJV] 33 Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.
- [Hebrews 1:1-3 KJV] 1 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, 2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by [his] Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; 3 Who being the brightness of [his] glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;
Envy
- [Luke 19:11-14 KJV] 11 And as they heard these things, he added and spake a parable, because he was nigh to Jerusalem, and because they thought that the kingdom of God should immediately appear. 12 He said therefore, A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return. 13 And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come. 14 But his citizens hated him, and sent a message after him, saying, We will not have this to reign over us.
- [Gen 37:6-10] 6 And he said unto them, Please hear this dream which I have dreamed: 7 For, behold, we binding[h481] sheaves[h485] in the field, and, lo, my sheaf arose, and also stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves stood round about, and bowed down to my sheaf. 8 And his brothers said to him, shall you [h4427]reign to reign over us? or shall you [h4910]rule to rule over us? And they hated Aleph/Tav{/Vav} him yet the more for his dreams, and for his words. 9 And he dreamed yet another dream, and told Aleph/Tav{/Vav} him his brothers, and said, Behold, I have dreamed a dream again; and, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars bowed down to me. 10 And he told to his father, and to his brothers: and his father rebuked him, and said unto him, What this dream that you dreamed? Shall I and your mother and your brothers indeed come to bow down ourselves to you to the earth?
- [Matthew 21:33-46 KJV] 33 Hear another parable: There was a certain householder, which planted a vineyard, and hedged it round about, and digged a winepress in it, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country: 34 And when the time of the fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the husbandmen, that they might receive the fruits of it. 35 And the husbandmen took his servants, and beat one, and killed another, and stoned another. 36 Again, he sent other servants more than the first: and they did unto them likewise. 37 But last of all he sent unto them his son, saying, They will reverence my son. 38 But when the husbandmen saw the son, they said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and let us seize on his inheritance. 39 And they caught him, and cast out of the vineyard, and slew. 40 When the lord therefore of the vineyard cometh, what will he do unto those husbandmen? 41 They say unto him, He will miserably destroy those wicked men, and will let out vineyard unto other husbandmen, which shall render him the fruits in their seasons. 42 Yahusha saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes? 43 Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof. 44 And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder. 45 And when the chief priests and Pharisees had heard his parables, they perceived that he spake of them. 46 But when they sought to lay hands on him, they feared the multitude, because they took him for a prophet.
